You’ve loved horses your entire life, perhaps you did some trail riding as being a teenager and perhaps you had the opportunity to re-kindle your ex of horses in the future. Then the day were only available in your late 50’s you’d a the opportunity buy your first horse. Are you to old to battle this beautiful, majestic, powerful animal?
In my personal, you aren’t, I say that because I gone after the country at 57 and bought my first horse at 58. What did I consider when I was choosing my horse? First I thought of the I was efficient at physically, bearing that in mind I thought I wouldn’t desire a horse over 15hh, anything bigger that makes for the bigger fall and possible broken bones.
My second consideration was the horses age and temperament, a great old bombproof horse that I could ease myself back to riding with. Then there is breed I wasn’t fussed about breed, purely because being a teenager I rode many different breeds, and the way calm a horse is, is much more about how they can be trained and treated not the breed.
I was thinking Quarter horse or Standardbred, I leased a Standardbred during my late 30’s and hubby was very calm but he could be very stubborn. One breed I never considered was obviously a Thoroughbred, I thought this breed might be way over my head and from what I’d seen watching horse racing, my thought was simply too highly strung for me personally.
After taking the many above note I started trying to find my dream horse, and I found him. It didn’t take long personally to love a horse I found within an ad on Facebook. This is where I started questioning my sanity, this horse is 16.1hh 11 yr old off of the track thoroughbred, he hadn’t been ridden since his racing days and I didn’t be aware of if he was sound.
The facts are I didn’t care, I fell deeply in love with the horse inside ad and I fell all the more in love when I met him. Yeah so he’s a thoroughbred, he needs re-educating and to be a pleasure horse he’s green, but so am I. I used to ride feisty horses but I was 16 not 58… so I ask myself “What had you been thinking” my solution is I wasn’t thinking, I just knew this boy was for me personally.
So now the next question for you is am I too green and too old undertake this mammoth task to acquire my horse sound enough to use and eventually ride. If I had no knowledge about horses in any way then perhaps it can be too big a task to me. If there is no such thing as the internet on the other hand it might be too big a task in my opinion. The thing is I believe I can make this happen and I love and trust my boy and I know he loves and trusts me.
Another factor to weigh is fitness, I am not too unfit but to start out groundwork I need to intensify my fitness which I am taking care of now. Age is simply a number, have got the passion, the love plus the commitment absolutely nothing is impossible. Learn to read your horse and pay attention to him and also make safety essential, horses are big powerful animals and are efficient at doing us some serious damage, even though accidentally.
